Abstract:
Face Mask Media Manufacturing
Presenter: Alfiya Ansar, Cummins Filtration
<
p>Cummins has continuously led innovations in design and materials for dies
el filters since 1958 and in the 1990 was the first to introduce non-woven
materials, specifically composites with melt blown fiber, into lube and fue
l products. Shortage of meltblown media used in PPE (personal protective e
quipment) is a current critical concern since the emergence of coronavirus-
2 or SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). While Cummins works almost exclusively with hig
h temp polymers like polyester and nylon, it was possible to leverage Cummi
ns technology to melt blow polypropylene media with finer fibers needed for
surgical face masks and respirators. Expertise from Dr. Peter Tsai and col
laboration from Oakridge labs on electrostatic charging of the media ensure
d that the media met efficiency needs of level 2 surgical masks (ASTM F2100
) and NIOSH N95 respirators. Protective Spunbond Polyprolypene layers are a
dded on the melt blown media, to meet the requirements PPE products.
