Virtual Fall Conference Includes a Session on “Disruptions to the Filtration Industry”
The American Filtration & Separations Society will devote its entire fall conference on December 2 and 3 to the air filtration industry’s response to COVID-19: What we have witnessed, what we have learned, and what is on the horizon. To accommodate a wide range of time zones, the virtual conference will take place from 10am to 2pm CST on both days.
The conference is offering six sessions covering various industry areas responding to the pandemic:
- Recent Developments in Filter Media
- Face Masks - Industry Update
- Laboratory Testing for Performance Against Bioaerosols
- Air Filtration for Confined Spaces I
- Air Filtration for Confined Spaces II
- Disruptions to the Filtration Industry
In the “Disruptions to the Filtration Industry” session on December 3, three subject matter experts will each deliver a 20-minute presentation.
Joe Gorman, Camfil USA, will present “How the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Affected the Air Filtration Industry.”
In May of 2020, the Center for Disease Control announced, on the advice of ASHRAE, that public HVAC systems should utilize air filtration products with a minimum rating of MERV 13 to provide a safe indoor environment. This announcement coincided with the nonwoven industry facing unprecedented melt blown material shortages due to demand of face masks, PPE and other critical hospital materials. These events have stressed the air filtration industry throughout 2020 and are projected to impact the demand for higher efficiency filters for the foreseeable future.

Brad Kalil, Director of Market Intelligence and Economic Insights for INDA, the Association of the Nonwovens Industry, will present “Understanding the State of the Nonwovens Industry and a Market Gone Mad.”
Brad Kalil will discuss the market changes in demand and supply as the nonwovens industry responded, and still responds, to the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically, the presentation will present a pre-pandemic view of the nonwovens markets, the current state, and a look into the future.
The future outlook incorporates both demand possibilities and supply reactions, particularly, new capacities coming to alleviate shortages in the filtration markets.
The presentation will highlight key findings based on market intelligence from INDA’s annual North American Nonwoven Supply Report and from Brad’s recently published Meltblown Nonwovens Markets: COVID-19 Impact Analysis report.

Leonard Castellano, Parker Hannifin Corporation, will present “Electrification of Mobile Transport and Its Effect on the Filtration Applications.”
Government regulations across the globe are enacting more and more stringent policies on pollution and CO2 emissions. Vast quantities of pollutants and CO2 are being generated from the use of energy produced from fossil fuels. In response to ever growing research and data on the detrimental effects of these on our climate, major reductions are being called for as early as 2030.
This short presentation will attempt to highlight the effect that development and acceptance of alternative energy sources in the mobile transport markets will impact the filtration industry.
The advent of Electric Vehicles (EVs) utilizing battery technology, and H2PEM Fuel Cells are already quickly gaining ground in Europe and Asia. As these technologies continue to advance and the commercialization and customer acceptance continues to grow (along with the necessary infrastructure) we will see a shift in the filtration, separation and purification applications currently being appreciated in today's world.
